Downer secures BHP contract

CONTRACTOR Downer EDI has bagged a $A71.7 million electrical contract with BHP Billiton Iron Ore to undertake works at its Jimblebar project in Western Australia’s Pilbara.

The Newman HV power system augmentation project forms part of the broader Jimblebar project which will increase ore production capacities of BHP’s iron ore assets in WA.

Under the contract, Downer will undertake both greenfields and brownfields transmission line and substation works to provide power to a new mine at the Jimblebar operations, located 39km east of Newman.

Work will entail the supply and installation of electrical power and control components for two new substations, modifications on existing substations and transmission lines and the upgrade of the network control system and the installation of a new 132 kilovolt transmission line between Newman and the Jimblebar mine.

The new contract with BHP comes on top of a five-year agreement signed in March this year whereby Downer is supplying locomotives to BHP’s Pilbara works.

Shares in Downer were unchanged at $3.24 this morning.
